September 2019 Outbreak Notices

Welcome to our September update on disease outbreaks around the world, from our lead nurse Jo Thompson. This month we include updates from Bahamas, DRC, Nigeria, Europe, and Philippines. 

 

Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas:

  • On 2 September 2019, hurricane Dorian made landfall in the Bahamas at Abacos and Grand Bahama Island.

August 2019 Outbreak Notices

Welcome to our August update on disease outbreaks around the world, from our lead nurse Jo Thompson. This month we include updates from DRC, Myanmar, Uganda, Kenya, Benin and an update on Dengue Fever. 

 

Ebola in DRC

  • Ebola began in DRC in August 2018 in the north east of the country.  Since 18 August 2019, a total of 2877 cases have been confirmed with 1934 deaths.  

  • The risk to travellers is generally extremely low. 

May 2019 Outbreak Notices

May 2019 updates includes health alerts in Thailand, DRC, Algeria, Argentina and details on Rabies.

 

Woman dies of Rabies:

  • The Norwegian Institute of Public Health have reported that a 24 year old woman has died of rabies after being bitten by a puppy when on holiday in the Philippines.  The woman become ill 2 months after her return from holiday and died on the 11 May 2019. She had not been vaccinated against rabies.

March 2019 Outbreak Notices

March 2019 updates includes health alerts in Uzbekistan, Paraguay, DRC and Sri Lanka. We also provide an update on Zika Virus and Cyclone Idai.

 

Uzbekistan and Paraguay are malaria free:

  • The World Health Organisation have certified that Uzbekistan is malaria free from December 2018 and Paraguay from June 2018.

 

February 2019 Outbreak Notices

February 2019 updates includes health alerts in Philippines, DRC, Nigeria, Uganda and Jamaica. 

 

Medical product alert for falsified rabies vaccine in the Philippines:

  • On 30 January, the World Health Organisation (WHO) issued a Medical Product Alert concerning falsified Verorab rabies vaccine circulating in the Philippines. The manufacture of the authentic Verorab product has confirmed that they did not manufacture the falsified vaccines.

Ebola - Update & Guidance

The Ministry of Health in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, WHO and partners are responding to an Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak since 1 August 2018, with the epicentre being Mangina town in Mabalako Health Zone, North Kivu Province, in the east of the country. Confirmed cases have also been reported from Beni Health Zone (North Kivu Province) and Mandima Health Zone (Ituri Province).
